1月20日 GreynessI had to go to Finland for some work so I stayd till this morning; yesterday I came from Tampere, where I just said hello to mother, and then I met with an old friend in Helsinki. I used to live with her about ten years ago, and we were chatting away for two hours where life has lead us if anywhere. I was fun anyway, she being a mother and living a very stable life, and me with endless road to travel with my Peter Pan syndrome. And still it seems we understand each other as well as always. I went to Jouni afterwards, and Sami came a bit later. Jouni was showing off with his cooking skills and prepared various sushi; I was even a bit suprised as even the estetic part was well managed. Some people can. Guys headed for bar, and I went to bed.
I jumped to 7.23 train to st. pete, and even thou it's a 5 hours trip it went really fast. Everything was very grey; the earth, the sky, the train and the people inside. Not in any bad way. It was like meditation, I love staring at the moving scenery where you can't distinguish the land from the sky as there was a bit of snow on the ground. And iPod blasting rock music with heavy bass through my brain, partly sleeping, partly dreaming of things to come. I did bit a cleaning as all my travel stuff was still around the floor, then I went to cut my hair on the nearby saloon; this time the hairdresser didn't speak a word of English. Afterwords some sushi, and then I prepared a bath and while waiting I put together the guitar for Guitar Hero III game and practised a little. Damn hard. And then I sank into bath with some chocolade and a book; the amber spyglass. Quite perfect, superlazy day.
1月14日 TokyoI'm back to St. Pete, was fun to push myself into crowded metro again in a slight rain. I have to recommend to all expats that after a few months have a holiday in some strange culture for two weeks and when you come back it feels like home.
Have to write about Tokyo while I still remember. Flew from Sydney on Friday morning, no sleep on the plane, hangover. Landed about 06.00, after some figuring out found out that taxi would be 200€ so waiting for the first bust to the centre. Slept all way there and was a bit disappointed that skyscrapers were not so tall; Shanghai was a bit more impressive. Other thing I wondered was that how come people dressed for business were collecting carbage from the streets with some tool; I guess some local environment friendly tai-chi. I jumped of somewhere, and same lady stopped a taxi for me to my hotel. They wouldn't check me in before three, so I left my bags and headed for imperial gardens. I felt really underdressed as every single person except me was wearing a black business suit; I guess winter is not the biggest tourist season. But people really filled all the movie cliches; I got the bows and super controlled politness, but underneath people were really nice and helpful.
After the garders and some hot chocolate somewhere I walked towards the Tokyo TV tower. After the mandatory pics I decided to challenge Tokyo Metro system; it's not exactly small. After a few wrong trains I got to Harajuku, and the dress code changed totally. People were supercool, with latest street gear and hair challanging the sky; some of them looking more like characters from the computer games. I walked to Meiji shrine, half dead from jetlag and lack of sleep, and then headed back to centre. Found some killer good japanese food place; have to agree with my colleague Anton that Japanese food in Japan is really really good and better than outside Japan.
Got my room, slept a few hours and headed for trouble full of energy. And feeling somehow eleted, happily manic. Walked into first bar and asked where I should continue. Some guy gave me directions and some pack of coupons for 10 drinks in some bar. Off I went, first to delicious dinner (no idea what) and then to that 300 bar. 300 meant that all drinks were 300 yen, but you had to buy coupons. So that guy had given me his coupons worth 3000 yens. I started thankfully destroy them beer by beer until some girl came to talk to me, her friends were working and she was bored. After a few more she said we should go to Harajuku where all the action is and off we went. Funnily enough metro was full of puke, a thing I thought quite unique to Finland. Otherwise so contrlled poor Japanese seem to lose it after a few drinks, I think they had some genetic issue. Well, we went in a few quite dodgy clubs, ate some more Japanese and she wanted Karaoke. These are different than in Europe, you get your own private room. There was some touch controlled system, and two mikes.
Well, she started singing and I continued to impress with my drinkin. After a while she started to demand that I sing, which I don't do for the obvious reason that I can't hear notes. Well, I did, I started with some Elvis whick I totally fucked up. I tried HIM, but they had only some complicated Butterfly song so I continued to such. Rasmus Shadows went a bit better, or I started to sound better as I got more drunk. Anyway, I got really exited and went for the When september comes and I'm quite convinced that I did it better than Green Day. Somehow I managed to get a taxi and get to sleep at some point, but it was a pretty cool night.
I had heavy goals for my only full day in Tokyo, but as I had really bad hangover and it was raining I tuned it down a bit. I managed to get ticket to last round in the Ghibli museum, and before that I visited the Biggest temple in Tokyo. It was around eight as I was back in centre; I rewarded myself with yet another four course Japanese mystery menu, did some post card writing and totally passed out in the hotel. Next morning was normal how to find the airport adventure, and I wasted last of my money to noise cancelling headphones. I really have to recommed them, it's such luxus to make the engine noise disappear and just concentrate on your favourite music, movies or games. Three hours in Hki-Vantaa, it was actually quite fun. I met a group of foreigners, two of them living in Finland and all of them nicely drunk. So we discussed the expatriate life and had a very warm conversation, and said a few times Kippis, Hölkynkölkyn, Salu, Prost etc. Then home after the flight with the black and smelly Volga, just as it should be. And I quite directly passed out again. Now it's nine o'clock, and I leave the office.
The pics are in www.flickr.com/photos/plimppu or in Facebook, look with Peter Lindberg who lives in Russia =) 1月10日 Airborne againVery unsuccesful try to upgrade to business has left me stranded with the free internet at Sydney airport. Boarding in hour and a half. Some colleagues started to harass me already; which is nice. The holiday has been pretty cool so far and I feel happy to get back to work in Russia. Just a brief visit to Tokyo. I added some pics from Ixus to Facebook, just browse with Peter Lindberg. Last days have been really lazy, couple of movies, beaches, some books, loads of sunshine. Yesterday evening we had a dinner and a 'few' drinks, starting from Watershed in Darling harbour, then went to Wooloomooloo..something to have a bit posh dinner with Leon,Paula, Nina and Olli. And as Olli and Nina headed home we still continued to bar under the operahouse and added a few GT's to the damage. Then I crawled to Olli's place and made some drunken calls for example to my mother. Boy is doing fine in da world! I also bought the PSP as if I wasn't geek enough already, and some RPG action. The flight will be brief.. I'm traveling with two cameras, phone, ipod, and now also PSP. Next time I'll rope a laptop to the backage as well to keep some progress going.. Well, people without lives have to entertain themselves somehow =) 1月8日 Same Same LazyWell, enough of beach life; it has been cloudy today and my magnificent torso is slightly burned. Been a lazy day, went to gym again in Olli's house, then just browsing the hops for the most necessary stuff, two books, last Hellblazer album and 2 mambo t-shirts. Yesterday started with gym as well, then I headed to Bondi to grill my beautyful white skin, afterwords I walked a few beaces and tested my new zoom lens on surfers. Lazyyy..
Saturday the Sydney festival started and we met a big bunch of Finnish girls and some Australians as well, partly same bunch as New Year's eve. We saw some performances and ended in a cool party in the inner yard of some business buildings. Had a few drinks in a few places after that as well. I'm still a bit lost how should I react to girls; I guess it's better to let time heal before running into anything. They still look pretty, thou. I just can't imagine anything that I would like to say; and I'm just thinking why bother, it's gonna backfire one way or the other even if the first steps work out fine. Just horrified that I'm gonna be the most boring person I know..
Which brings me neatly to the books I have read.. I bough by accident a book city of lies from Ellory or something, I though it was Ellroy when I grabbed it. Not bad, I guess his first book, people a bit shallow, bits and pieces missing to make it really flowing. Good try anyway, nothing wrong with the style, next one is better I'm sure. I browsed through a life story of Kelly Slater, well, wouldn'r really put that among classics. Next I read the book Slash, yeah, G'n'R. I really sucked it in, quite amzing Rock'n Roll life, and nothing really that makes you envious. Very nice insight to childhood in L.A., the forming of rock bands, and most of all the pitfalls of drugs. Nicely written, good story, even the book itself makes it a paradox to trust the facts, such a long periods pass with a habit. Last night finished Exit Music by Rankin, supposedly last Rebus book. Good stuff, not the best Rebus, but good ending with the classic moves to piss of politicians and being on suspension.
Jesus, the sun came out, there's no peace for the skin cancer candidate. Have to head out to make sure I look like Frankenstain back to St. Pete. 1月5日 Same but differentHolding rain in Sydney and watching Jarkko Nieminen to get into finals. We just drove back from Katoomba. That was really nice, we spent the morning in Bondi beach and then went to do some trekking in the blue mountains, amazingly beautyful.. We found also a very nice art deco reastaurant, Avalon; it was really a suprise as the place seemed a bit like a backcountry. Also the club we visited was very artistic, disco floor straight from the Twin Peaks dance scene. There's some festival in Sydney toninght and it should be running even thou some tropical storm is hitting the place at the moment. 1月1日 The bestest vacation everWell, life has sometimes evil ability to treat you in a way that makes it close to impossible to complain about anything. Which is extremely tough situation for us Finns. I landed to Sydney and Olli and Nina were waiting with their V8 Holden to take me sailing to Sydney harbour. Their friend were waiting in some 11 metre very nice sailing boat. We sailed under the bridge, had a nice picnic and swim just opposite side of the opera house, it was 26 degrees, not too bad. Sting was also chilling in the same bay in a boat at the same day =) We were shown where Nicole Kidman and Russell Crowe have their flats. We also headed for the open sea for some hard core sailing, and on the way back the dolphins were jumping all over the boat. Not too bad start.
I was really jet lagged and dizzy and had a short nap, then we headed for the bars. We found some nice places, and in the end were too drunk to get in (or we were refused as Olli honestly answered to the bouncer how much we have been drinking during the day). Next day Manly beach, I emptied the Ripcurl shop and was like all other white tourists in their surf shorts. We had a few beers on that night as well.
On new year's eve we did some shopping, and then went to Sydney harbour to get into are before their close the gates. The whole thing was very well organized and to avoid trouble the amount of people was limited. We got next to the opera house ok, and spend some six hours just talking and taking photos. Nine o'clock there was the first firework show, and up close it was quite amazing. After that we went to some home party to Nina's work mates, on a very high building on King's cross. After some heavy drinking and small talks it was midnight and we went to some of their friend's flat on the top of the building. They had a huge terrace with an amaxing view over all the skyscrapers and harbour area, so we saw the main fireworks all over the city. It was an amazing show, and from our viewing point it really gave me the goosepumps just to see something so beautyful.. somewhere arounf two we went to sleep or more accurately to pass out. And today to some harbour beach to recover (the surf were too big for swimming or surfing on the sea side). Tomorrow we are invited to some Aussie barbeque, and then we should head for some serious surfing.. urgh, not bad. Boy happy. 12月28日 The BeachJust started my Holiday from Patang beach Thailand; it was just a stop over on my way to Sydnet. Already at the Phuket airport and taking off in 30 mins. I had couple of friends coming with a same plane and staying for two weeks, so I had some company to eat, wonder in horrid discos, take thai massages (no sex involved) and drink like a sponge. My first time in Thailand, and maybe not the last. Next time it will be something differnt than Patang beach, which is one big ass fucked brothel. Old, fat guys and under aged girls. Well, not my war to fight, still sad. And it was fun of course, escape from cold and busyness to other side of the world, and just relax with some long-time-no-see friends. Good start.
12月24日 The endingI wish you all very happy new year, and peaceful Christmas time. I just came to Lohjansaari, to spend here the eve and cool down for couple of days. It has been pretty amazing rabbit run for last weeks, so many people, too many airports and cities. And in some funny way it starts to feel normal. No much stress or exitement, and in general a very positive drive to finish this year.
Yesterday I came from St. Petersburg, spent a while in Helsinki and then drove to Tampere to meet some more friends. Some friends I haven't seen for eight years. It was a real walk down the memory lane. Loads of fun, but also loads of moist in my eyes. It's very clear to see what you have left behind when you embrace only new things, and just run after new adventures. Some of my friends have families and a very stable situation, and I seem to be still the same restless idiot getting in all kinds of weird trouble all the time. Today I did my shopping and then we had a Christmas dinner with my Mother. Very traditional. In a Chinese restaurant.
I hope you too have time to chill for Christmas. Think of old things and people you love. I sleep now two days and then head for Phuket for two days. And then to Sydney for New Year. I have some good friends down there, and I hope to leave work and heartaches on this side of the world. On the way back I'll stop for two days in Tokyo. really looking forward to that. Back to St. Pete on 14th.
I hope I'll have shitloads of photos for you soon. I just bought a new lens for my canon, 55 - 250 with a stabilazer. Maybe I can catch some surfers for you while I'm off the board myself (as if I could surf). I was catching a couple of waves on my last time in Australia. Well, take care, if you spending your winter in a cold country envy me a little bit. Makes me feel good. 12月9日 Non-bloody SundayI consider this day good. Started off by waking up for the noise of the construction work in the yard with a slight hangover. They are building a new set of flats on the attic and covering what little sun is coming to my flat. So I moved to sofa and started extremely productive day by watching three episodes of simpsons (legally bought tenth season). Then I moved to movie Crank, which was also very entertaining and fast. Like watching a comic book in high speed. Sushi lunch with Ivan. He also bought me a Beeline sim card, as my mobile gadgets don't work with megafon. We have been connected to some telcos and I have have to demo them the cool mobile shit we have. Off to barber shop, very therapeutic haircut. Gym, good workout, then I relaxed a bit more in solarium. Getting my cancer cells activated for the Australian sun (I have a kick ass holiday coming). Then to enjoy one beer in the other side bar, met also Lars (who I was out with yesterday) and there was a live jazz band. Some groceries, more movies coming, also the I should finish the legend of zelda on Wii so I can move to Metroid. Important stuff. Absolutely zero work, well, except a short task list for tomorrow. Next week will be a bit exhausting. But only two more to go before holiday.
Life has been extremely busy and also a bit sad lately so I just share this one day which I consider a Sunday properly wasted. The Finnish independence day was one big row of events starting with some customer meetings. In the end I was drunk and tired, and escaped from the Sokos Hotels after party as mood swings started to kick in. The bad thing here is that most free time events are also filled with customers, or it's good thing, but not when you're on a bad mood and feeling like sharing it. Well, I'm a big boy; it's just that I have been such a social sunshine that some people were a bit suprised to glimpse to the dark side. As a proper Finnish male, I don't speak if something is bugging me, it just pours out to innocent people if I drink a bit. But this Sunday felt good. And the frozen Neva and the lights of St. Petersburg are really beautyful. I think everything's gonna be just sweet. 11月25日 TurbulenceI know that your life has been close to unbearable due to my neglience to the blog space. Would be corny to state that I have been busy. I have been busy. And shitty connections, or out of battery at the airport, or just sad due to some relationship reasons. Anyway, it doen't mean that I don't love all my millions of readers. I do. Sincerely. As I do everything. With a honest heart and big sad eyes.
As you are eagerly waiting to hear what has happened lately I should probably tell you that I can hardly remember. That's how busy it has been. Or maybe I have just been drunk all the time. To save time I just briefly describe last couple of days and then get back to neglecting you, my dear and selflessy (and a bit stupidly) faithful readers.
I have had some problems with visa so I have spent too much time in Finland lately, on thursday I went Moscow to use use my last days left for the Russian ground. It has been a long time since my last visit there (the trans-siberian trip back in 1952 (not sure about the year, but when I was young and pretty)). It was worky worky, but on friday our account manager in one big software company asked to show me the city, so he picked me up around six. We went around with a driver, did some walks, saw the new City (which looks like Shanghai to me), the old town, university (here you can see the whole city which looks quite incredible during the night). My guide has studied the history so I heard from Stalin's classisism and other styles of architecture.
He had also made a reservation to some new restaurant, where I had some minestrone and Chilean sea bass. Excellent really, then we picked up his friend and headed for some night club, passed the queue as vip guests and headed for our own table. Loads of fun. I headed early home as last few days had been quite intensive. On Saturday back to Finland, went to see Eastern Promises not to get too far away from Russian theme with my friend Jouni. then we went to have a few drinks with some other friends, not a big night out, these days it's more quality time just to see some friends once in a while.
Today I went to see the Earth-Sea movie from the Ghibli studios, really excellent (if you loved the books and are an anime fan like me it's a real killer), then we had a catch up after two years with Harri Såltin. I was supposed to see some other friends as well, but I stiil haven't heard from them. And I should go see the Beowulf movie at nine. Kind of movie oriented now, but loads of stuff that I like are showing right now.
And I was in an article in Talouselämä magazine (the issue out now) with a pic. If you want to read me fake some business stuff have a look, and there's also the toy I'm using for studying Russia in a picture. My 15 seconds of fame; I hope my mother is proud of me and has dragged her lazy ass out of the door to get the magazine. Her half braindead, ex-alcoholic boy is making it big, muaahahhaaahah (yes, I'll go get my medication). Tada. 11月4日 SnowyThe first flakes of snow were gently falling down over the fast developing city of St. Petersburg. I was playing tennis in some goverment office building; it was on the sixth floor in some old gymnastics hall, and there was a view over the roofs and to several cranes busy building new skeletons of beton. I wonder if snowflake is happy to land and end it's quick and falling life on beton. Or maybe they are like that funny monkey race, humans; some holding on every meaningless breath, and some unable to see sense in breathing and finding ways to end it fast. At the moment I don' feel great desire to fall down and melt.
Work week was a bit too busy, loads of trouble with admin stuff, but business side is going great. Head was spinning a bit, so I relaxed with a few beers and some friends. Saturday was recovering from the relaxation, and I went to a wholesale market with some friends with a card to shop there. Well, the load was mostly liquid, I won't get into that. After trafficing alcohol all over city, we were sampling the staff in my flat and playng some tennis with Wii. Dinner, more beers, more Wii. Some guys from a construction company came over as well. One guy was in such a jolly mood, that he accidentaly swapped the beer I gave him to a tube for tennis balls. After watching a while his futile attempts to drink the tennis balls, I swapped the beer back to his hand. I just love Finnish drinking habits.
Tomorrow is holiday, but I have some stuff to take care of. Mother is a bit depressed over all the health issues that have befallen on her lately. Ignoring the symptoms and action is just no more an option. My baby is all of a sudden a businesslady flying around and doing business plans. She seems happy. Makes me happy. 10月28日 Business as usualJup, working has been quite intensive, loads of work interviews, customer meetings, partner meetings, this and that events, administrative stuff and blaa blaa. It has been a bit too intensive, but things are going to the right direction and most of time I can push forward with really cool people so I doesn't get to my nerves too much.
This Friday I went to see some club opening next door, my neighbour is some local celebrity organizing & running new clubs so he came to push us through a huge queue. I'm not much of a clubber, but it was fun to see how the bold&beautyful party out in St. Pete. Saturday just some gym, and a few beers with my colleague. There had been too little sleep lately, so I just turned mobile on silent and slept for 12 hours. It's very nice that I have found many nice friends here, but I just don't have the energy to go out every night.
Sunday I was feeling super, so I headed to gym. I also went to play tennis with a friend of a friend from NCC. As there has been a while since previous time now my old body is hurting everywhere. Two flooeball teams are also starting so I hope my sports can be a bit more aerobic during the winter.
Mother survived the eye operation, she's just a bit depressed as she also has diabetes and some blood pressure problems. Well, she's a tough lady, and I hope she will soon visit me in St. Pete. Special diet is already planned, only food for the soul.
My baby is now some director trainee and traveling more than I do. Well, I'm glad, I was pushing her to do something with her life, but maybe little bit less would have been enough :-) She's seeing the world, and having busload of new experiences; I hope I still get a thought a two sometimes.
That's it, I'm quite happy and reaally tired. I'll indulge my geeky brain into some science fiction and hit the bed. 10月18日 Exit lightEnter the Autumn. It's getting already dark around six o'clock, the few rays of sunshine reveal all the beautyful colors of the fall. Not too often thou; mostly it's raining. Mother is right now sitting in a hospital in Finland and waiting for an eye operation; I feel a bit guilty for not being there, but my dear sister is on her way from Stockholm and she should be there before the operation is over to take her home. This week has been quite tight on working, late evenings in the office, on monday some sports, one night taking some colleagues out. And I have been sleeping extremely well; which is always great for an old insomniac. I have left the laptop at work some evenings to avoid too much working. Today some friends are coming from Finland, I hope I can skip some of the meetings booked for this evening and go meet them somewhere. Anyway, weekend should be quite relaxing. Very uneventful, but I'm feeling very content with the state of things in the universe. Which is nice. 10月14日 Babies and boozeI am stuck in the customs in Viipuri, on the border between Finland and Russia. I went to Finland due to some meetings, and Friday there was also a baby shower?? or is it actually some other word when boys are celebrating their babies. Valtteri, my so called "petsiveli" from years back got a beautyful baby girl and he and his friends had organized a really nice party in one club. Loads of booze, cigars and some catching up with the few people I knew. I went to continue in Lux with an old friend as we had a company party there with some other friends. It was a very typical Finnish evening, loads of fun, too much to drink. When leaving the club my colleague got punched to the face just by giving some drunk instructions how to use the elevator. And on the street outside there was a russia lady playing balalaika for money, and one Finnish super idiot was smearing 20 euros note to her face and trying to get her to leave with him. So I had the next wrestling match, and I had to stay probably half an hour till the guy understood that he's behavior ain't bringing any results. Saturday was shopping and hangin around day. There were the famous "Crazy Days" in the biggest high class department store so Helsinki was full of yellow bags. I got a few new shirts, socks and other business accessories. We also went with Jouni to buy me a specific table cloth from Marimekko and discussed a long to how it matches the color of the curtains. It was funny, the female clerk started to talk about Your home as if we were a couple. Indeed, how they could make such a mistake. Also must have extra controller for Nintendo Wii was aquired. If I had any friends I could have swell time. I had to also go to do a little inventory in the storage with my stuff from the Netherlands. I found most of the missing winter clothes, some beloved books and tennis rackets to bring with me. So I'm loaded like a camel again; when I dragged everyhting to the train before seven o'clock this morning I was thinking if I had really properly considered if if there's something wrong with some of my choices. That lasted 3 seconds as usual. Of course also seeing all the babies and families and friends also could raise some thoughs why in earth I'm living like a gypsy so far from all the things I know. Well, that's just it. I would die of boredom if I knew what's gonna happen tomorrow. Last evening I still went to see Finland - Belgium football match with some friends, not that I even know the rules, but it feels good so sit down with some old friends. No matter how briefly and seldom it happen. Then early train and towards Russia and new adventures, let there be many. 10月11日 Frozenyes, they were. Frozen to death. Flowers by the old light pillars here in St. Petersburg. I faster must write, blogs don't themselves write. Yesterday I worked quite late and went directly to meet some FinPro people and we went to excellent jazz club, JCF I think. It was a good reminder that I have been working too much lately, I need something special to stop my brain running like a squirrel inside a wheel. It's very good that I'm exited about the work, but there is also the other side; you need balance and rest, too. And as network here in St. Petersburg grows free evenings grow sparse.
I was thinking a bit about how the countries affect you; here in Russia as business goes fast I feel very energetic myself, and some colleagues in Finland seem to talk like in slow motion movie. Come on, come on, we need to this and million other things! And people who come from Moscow to St. Petersburg tell the same thing; that world starts to spin slooower. I think I have to go check out Moscow one day. There is a MoMo event on 22nd, but I won't go unless I get speaker slot. What's the point doing anything if you can't be thrilled by hearing your own sweet voice? And in Czech Republic I was going to mountains, snowboarding all the time, workign at regular times, thinking about babies. So my theory is that my personality and values are affected by the locations. What I was in Netherlands I don't know. I was really thinking about it. When I got out of melancolic stupor, I think I was kind of career oriented, taking it easy (no external substances were involved in this (as if)). I bought loads of comic books, that I did. But even thou I lived next to Amsterdam, I didn't go out much. I don't go out much here either, but the few times I have it has been great fun.
The previous day there was a great seminar at the embassy about aquisitions and just selecting you parners in Russia. Worth gold really, I ended up having a few glasses of Champagne by Neva with some senior businessman. Some of them just retiring and sharing their wisdom by patiently answering my inqueries about Russian market.
Weekend was quite relaxed as well. I really can't tell much about Saturday. I can tell you something just to tease your curiosity. I sent a SMS message to my colleague around one o'clock that "I'm waiting for the police outside a whorehouse". Just not to tease your curiosity too much I'm 100% against prostitution. It was something totally different, and at that moment I was really doing exactly that.
I have to run now to the train to Finland, I forgot my keys, so I had to come through home. And had few minutes to write you. Stay real! 9月30日 Ruotsinlaiva NevallaLazy lazy morning. I have been watching Simpsons season 10 and sleeping really late. One friend, Mikko, drank a bit too much yesterday and he was sleeping it off on my extra bed. Poor boy. He just dragged himself out with emerging physical and moral hangover. It was very nicely handled by the other side restaurant, they just put him to sleep on the couch where we could see him so that we won't forget him. In Finland they usually armwrestle you out of the restaurant if you take a nap; I have one friend who does that almost everytime he goes out so we have loads of statistical information.
Bouncers in Finland are a common wonder among foreign visitors; they really have all the power in the world as in some countries it's more as a service profession. Well, they were very nice here, but I was informed that in some bars here in St. petersburg that armwrestling style is more common. Live and learn. I carried that Mikko to my flat with some Russian guy and it was fun really, having a chat with one guy hanging between us more or less unconcious. His wife called just when I got him into the bunk, so she got the info as well. Mission accomplished. Just teasing Mikko, he said he reads this blog, enjoy your hangover :-) He said he's also addicted to facebook, I just added my profile on friday as I got couple of invitations. Looks like fun.
We had our company opening on thursday, and it was a nice success. Some problems with flights of some key speakers and such, but things like that are normal when putting many things together. Great interest from customers and partners, very nice evening out and also I think internally the eyes os some Finnish remote managers opened to the potential of the Russian market. So I have been busy with preparations and other business issues and also a bit sick at the same time, so it was a tough week.
Yesterday I participated a business cruise for Finnish and Swedish companies, that was loads of fun as well. Kaj Hahl from Promaco was organizing that and really delivered the promised "Ruotsinlaiva Nevalla" experience. Ruotsinlaiva being the ferry between Sweden and Finland. If you haven't been there, I don't want to even try to explain. There was karaoke with some good singers (ok, one) and some very bad and drunken singers. The latter being definitely part of authentic Ruotsinlaiva. Loads of nice and Interesting poeple, some of them will become my friends. You just know it from certain people. Even some business.
Afterwards drinks in Cafe Hermitage and The Other Side. That's it, still in bed. I think I drag my ass to gym now. 9月24日 There and backI think I forgot to write about the last chapter with the internet issue. One lady called Ivan and told him that “We are happy to inform you that you can’t have internet to your flat”. And closed the phone to Ivan’s ear, who was eager to continue with further questions. So options are my own landline (256k/8000rubles a month) or wait for one other operator starting to serve the area. A few people have commented the internet story; that it represents the level of services in Russia. Well, quite the contrary. It’s a funny story, especially the queuing and changing offices, but it’s more or less the only one of the sort. More of a metaphor how people see Russia than how it actually works. Just my bad luck to live in area with only one operator. As my mother had just seen stated somewhere “In Finland everything works, but nothing can be arraged, In Russia nothing works and everything can be arranged”. It’s not true, but indicates the right direction. For me it reminds the Finnish stubbornness in traffic, people rather collide than give way; and in most cultures with real traffic problems nobody follows rules, but the traffic is very flexible. And to most the statement might bring ideas that you can manage things with money in Russia; partly true surely, as in most countries, but through my working life it’s amazing to see how country and businesses are cleaning up their act. Mostly thanks to Putin’s heavy hand on the steering wheel. Of course the world is not black and white and I for last person would but labels like “good” and “bad” to things, but it seems the media concentrates only on a few negative hiccups when writing about Russia. Inside the country it definitely seems that things are going to the right direction.
BTW; I’m writing thins from the traditional 10.000 feet.. over Riga right now. Just flying from Prague to St. Petersburg. Day started in Ostrava 03.30, I managed to finish real paper work, so it’s blogging time. Things have been quite hectic, so I’ll only put together visit to Czech Republic. I went there on Thursday evening; and as these things go I was getting some stomach problems on the way. I should be off the coffee. I just forget sometimes. I won’t get into details; let’s just say that I could have had a nicer get-together with my girlfriend that yelling through the toilet door for more paper. Full speed office day on Friday continuing till midnight with certain colleagues who wanted also boost the team spirit unofficially. Also seeing old pal, Gregory, after a long time. Back to the toilet for the night and then we had wedding of my dear friend Petr Otahal ahead of us. As some extra message from god that he doesn’t like me I was also getting a flu. Well, the wedding was indeed nice, first a family ceremony in their flat, then the official part in the town office (in an old castle) and then the celebration (which I understood was very typical Czech). It means loads of food, then beer, other drinks, some games, dancing, and then next round of food, a roasted pig, more games, more drinks. Some traditions were very familiar like tossing the flowers, but some were new to me; recognizing the bride by the ankle or husband by the nose. All in all it was a very nice wedding; the couple seemed to be really happy, and we really happy to participate. Unfortunately we had to leave early as I had to get to the toilet early for the night. Pics -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/plimppu/sets/72157602145273408/ Sunday was just recovering; I felt like a cheater as I promised to dedicate the day for worshipping my girlfriend. I was shaking under the blankets and we watched some billion episodes of Grey’s anatomy. And went to buy some more toilet paper. Well, she got a new winter jacket, which I had promised earlier. I don’t seem to fulfill all her requirements for a normal boyfriend, but at least she will be warm. In the evening we went for some sushi (other people than me) as there is now finally a sushi restaurant in Ostrava. One of my dear friends and a colleague has just moved to Ostrava, and everything seems to be going fine there. So I can peacefully concentrate on my door kicking in St. Pete. Currently it seems the couple of pieces of airplane food I managed to eat are staying in so future is looking bright. 9月20日 Mental SiberiaI think today is one of those ”I hate everybody” days. I’m on a plane to Vienna, sitting in the business class. Yes, strict violation to our company’s travel policy, I hope somebody reading my blog cares enough to report this. I just went to the toilet. Somebody had left baby’s shit bundle on the shelf, and naturally there was just a suitable bump to make it drop to my lap (details on request). My flat in St. Petersburg is also cold as hell; as it is sensible they start heating only in the end of September. It’s very hard to play Legend of Zelda with the Nintendo Wii motion controller when you are wearing two sweaters and a winter jacket. Especially that fishing motion is almost impossible.
Here I have to admit that there’s a little tiny ray of sunshine in this. I have floor heating in my toilet; I tried to dismantle my spare bed in kitchen so that I could sleep on the toilet floor. That was highly unsuccessful as most things I have done lately. But just putting all the carpets on the floor made it almost comfortable to sleep there. I was warm and the only downside is the horrible neck ache, which has developed to a nice headache. My lovely (and smart) girlfriend decided also to help her friend who is staying in my flat for free in Czech Republic; she made a rental agreement for just high enough fee so that her friend can get the best possible government support. Well, it’s all nice and that, but makes me automatically a tax evasion con artist as I have stated I don’t have any rent income (with proof already conveniently delivered to Czech government officials). Never help people, Peter; when the hell you gonna learn it always backfires? And as all criminal masterminds I have to advertise my hideous crimes; now all Czech tax authorities have to do is to type in “tax evasion” into their Googles and into jail goes me. And key goes to sun and melts. Yes, some minor disturbances in the world like wars, hunger, natural disasters, genocide of species by idiot human race, obliteration of planet earth by fleet of space aliens to make way for an intergalactic highway pale by comparison to my troubles. And on the top of my bottomless sorrow they bring me Champagne mixed with Campari. What were they thinking? I’m Russian goddammit; if they gonna mix something into my Champagne it should be vodka. Vodka! And there is only some 4 billion hours to my next flight. Who’s idea it was anyway become an airport addict mediocre businessman; I always wanted to be an alcoholic (just joking, mother; you know that). Life is hell. Over and out. 9月17日 Days of thunderI’m just sitting on a train stop in Toijala. A few minutes ago I jumped into a train to Helsinki and it seems to some super slow “I will stop on every godforgotten place” type of train. So I was reading my new Russian language study book. But I’m sure that all my three readers are dying with excitement to hear how I got here. It all started on a rainy morning..
Well, lets just jump back to last Sunday. As mentioned in the last exiting episode Ivan wanted to take me somewhere. That particular somewhere was Pavlovski park some 40km outside St. Petersburg. Peter the great’s wife wanted to make some nice gift for her husband so she build a house and quite magnificent park around it. Peter found it extremely heartwarming , but still did not visit the place too much as he’s only true lover was the sea. The trip there was fun, I went to the last stop I think metro line two, met Ivan and we jumped into some local train going to the place. As Ivan is a criminal mastermind he wanted to find a free entrance. So we walked almost around the park and ended up to pay anyway, all thou Ivan still dumfooled them to think I’m also Russian so I saved 250 rubles. That never works in St. Pete. Well, we walked around, I took some shitty photos -> http://www.flickr.com/photos/plimppu/sets/72157601937715294/ and I tried to get back to St. Pete with the local train without the ticket. Also that genius crime backfired as I couldn’t get past automatic exit gates without the ticket and ended up with yet another “I’m just an idiot tourist” performance. And paid full price. Monday has been wiped away from memory, I probably was busy or abducted by aliens. Tuesday was my birthday. It was fun day, let me give it to you in full color (it’s a bit worky stuffie, but I remove the names and details of any multi billion dollar deals I did). I asked Elina from work (who’s anoter life saver) to get me a taxi to Lan2an mobile networks event. I wanted to have a chat with some business partners. We had briefly discussed about some panel discussion, but I didn’t really have a clue. The taxi was late. The taxi was super late. Then they called that no cars can get pass morning traffic jam. It was after 40 minutes of waiting. I stopped one of the famous “grey” taxis by raising my hand. A Lada screeched to a stop with tires smoking instantly. I used my famous language skills to negotiate the price and of we went, me tapping the map and raising my eyebrows to ensure common understanding, and the driver saying da da and turning radio playing nostalgic Russian songs louder. After a while speeding past Porsche Cayannes on Nevsky prospect he naturally run out of gasoline. And off he went with a canister. Obviously no words we needed; sometimes you just run out of gasoline and then need more of it. So there I was, somewhere, sitting on a smelly lada with my suit on, holding my laptop bag close to my chest, nodding and smiling to the police cars passing by. And in no time the driver was back, tank filled and we actually came exactly to the right spot in no time. My host picked me up, I stated my apologies and he took me to a conference room. As I tried to sit down on the front row he took my hand and guided me to the stage; I was about to participate the first panel discussion and the audience had been waiting for me. Jesus! So, me and two other guys had microphones, and off we go introducing ourselves. The guys actually started by showing slides and giving 20 minutes presentations of some mobile network standards that were passing over my head quite high; way over my capacity to understand. I was nodding and looking coolly interested in the topics, my secret weapon in these situations. Act like you are so familiar with the topics discussed so that nobody dares to ask you any stupid questions. I was also going through my mind “What to present myself?”. Well, I prepared some slides while two guys were chatting away, removed the most of the sales bullshit, and presented some of our mobile stuff, but from the customer perspective. That’s the work stuff, but it went well, and I ended up having a few chats and the running away in search of the metro station with the lonely planet in my hand. In the office our personnel gave a me a birthday party; and as extremely suitable, gave me a talking bear. Not any talking bear; but a Russian teacher robot bear. It jumps from the shelf and bites my head if I pronounce something wrong. And on other times I can push numbers on its tummy and hear numbers and stuff. Very nice and thoughtful people these Russians indeed.
Work work work, and as it was my birthday I decided to indulge myself with some high arts and visited the opening of a photo exhibition in Peter’s and Paul’s fortress. My dear friend, consul of Finland was there giving a speech, and afterwards we jubilated my birthday with a glass of champagne. It was very nice to see coolest people of Helsinki photographed; how the street fashion really is these days. I also met some people interested in our company so it ended up as a really good event. Then I headed to a restaurant arranging some last details related to our opening event, had a super brief nap at home and was late to meet with ivan and we headed to MobileMonday event. It was a special MobileMonday, as there were people from Japan to Hawaii, most organizers around the world. The presentations didn’t really hit the spot and acoustics sucked, but I had very nice chats with some people I know already on the telecom side of things, and met loads of interesting people. Some guys were not heading back to the hotel, so we went for a few beers, and Sushi, and we toasted for my birthday for couple of times. Back home, the most urgent emails and to sleep at two. With a smile on my face. Next three days in Helsingor in Denmark, next to the castle of Hamlet. Not getting into that at all, except the way back really sucked ass. SAS is having some major problems; first flight I had my booking was grounded as they had couple of bad landings within one week with that plane type. Next one four hours later was having some technical problems; navigation system not working. So they got it working after maybe forty minutes and we had a nice, late flight to Finland. Not very convincing performance by SAS. Well, it was over the midnight, but I visited some friends and ended up tasting wines quite late with a Finnish writer. We had mostly very friendly discussions, but I had to defend Putin fiercely against what I call just western propaganda. I won’t deny the bad things; as it’s hard to get any truth from media, but what you see on everyday level in Russia is really amazing. Go Putin! Saturday. Got out of the hotel, my friend Jouni called, that he’s sitting in the train to Tampere and it’s leaving in 13 minutes. As I was going to the same direction, I jumped to taxi, and managed to get into the same train. He just started to work for the same company. My mother was waiting in the railway station. She had googled some sushi restaurants (she’s on a diet now due to some blood pressure problems) and we went to eat. Afterwards sister (she’s a doctor) was remotely helping her to get some right medication in the pharmacy. After that we went to Anttila to buy her a new digibox (traditional analog channels are shut down in Finland) and books and DVSs. And some bread. And the we headed to her place by taxi and I installed the box. I headed for a hotel, got a nap, and Jouni waked me up around eight. We had some drinks in Café Europa playing backgammon and chess (very civilized indeed). We visited also Amrillo, Henry’s pub, Las Palmas and Onnela. We both used to live there some hundred years ago so it’s fun to stroll through the old bars (most with quite different names these days) sometimes. We were also eating the excellent Finnish night food several times; Kebabs, meat pies etc. That’s it. The train just arrived to Järvenpää. Not so far from Helsinki any more. I gonna meet some more friend and work a bit for tomorrow’s meetings. And enjoy yet another hotel. Stay real! I stay fluffy and cute. 9月9日 Requiem for the death Boring friday turned out to be a very basic night out in St. Petersburg. Nothing special. The man who invited me to a restaurant opening seemed to be some sort of celebrity; I heard he was just half naked in some fashion magazine. So the jet set was having a ball, flashlights going off everywhere, and it was really loads of fun to see how things work here. I was there with my friend who runs an advertising company, when we were leaving for a night snack, we got invited to the next afterparty I think in Monaco bar. We stopped by in the other side bar, kitchen was closed, but there were plenty of familiar faces as the place is quite popular among expatriates. I hope my friend's band can perform there in the close future. We headed to this monaco bar, it was more like a small club with some top DJ playing for only 40 minutes, very V.I.P. And then the organizer arraged a ride for us to yet another club, Dekadenz, I think, and there we spent a few hours. On the morning side we were still hungry so we headed with one couple to some night cafes but with no luck related to food.
The next day was cooling down, horrible headache, but laughing a lot to some funny details from the previous evening. I took the metro number 3 and headed down two stops. There is Necropoli where the most famous artists are buried (along with some famous statesman). There is Tchaikovsky and Dostojevsky among the others. Very beautyful place; and a good drop back to earth after all the jetsetting; here we all end up any way, under the cold gravel. Well, probably not exactly here, but metaforically..
I walked back along Neva, jumped into the Metro, went so some shopping centre end of line 4, bought Nintendo Wii to avoind any temptations from the bars, and played Legend of Zelda till midnight, send good night message to my honey, and went to sleep feeling happy. And now I have to run as I might run late for my meeting with Ivan, who is taking me sightseeing somewhere. Sun shines, camera battery is full :-) |
